Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer. But, because it is visible, it is more easily detected, diagnosed and treated than other forms of cancer. There are many different techniques used in treating skin cancer depending on the location and severity of the cancer. With the exception of malignant melanoma, skin cancer is the most curable of all cancers.
While skin cancer can occur on any part of the body, it is usually found on skin that is exposed to sunlight. The most common places where skin cancer occurs are on the face, neck, hands and arms.
Changes in the skin are usually the first indication of skin cancer. If you see any of the following, it is best to see your doctor for an examination.
| A sore that does not heal | |
| Small, elevated, smooth, shiny or waxy skin | |
| Areas of the skin that are red or reddish brown, and raised | |
| Skin that is brown or scaly | |
| Areas that are bleeding or crusty | |
| Skin that looks like a scar and is firm |
There are several types of skin cancer, and various treatments depending on the type and severity. Your doctor can discuss these with you.
The primary treatment of skin cancer is surgical. Most skin cancers can be easily removed and a full recovery is expected. Your doctor can discuss your recovery issues based on the type of cancer you have, and the procedures used to address it.
