Some men and boys experience swelling of the breast tissue due hormonal changes, heredity conditions, disease or the use of certain drugs. Called Gynecomastia, the condition is generally not serious, unless it is caused by an underlying health condition. However, it can cause embarrassment and result in a lack of confidence or self esteem.
Gynecomastia surgery can be performed to restore the chest to a more normal appearance. The result is a much flatter, firmer, and better, contoured chest. The best candidates for Gynecomastia surgery are males that have firm, elastic skin that will reshape to the body’s new contours.
The Gynecomastia procedure removes fat and /or the glandular tissue from the breast area, along with excess skin, when necessary. Your surgeon will make a small incision just below the areola. The excess tissue is removed from the area through excision and the fat is removed with liposuction. Sutures will then be used to close the incision.
You will have swelling and soreness. The swelling should decrease in 2-4 weeks. A compression garment or bandages will be used to contour the chest. Your doctor will recommend that wait 1-3 weeks before returning to work or resuming physical activity. Final results may appear in 2-4 months, and incision lines will continue to fade for up to one year. Significant weight gain can reverse the results.
I feel a little uncomfortable coming in for liposuction consultation - will I be the only male in your office?
No. We do laser surgery, facial skin cancer surgery and other surgical procedures, so approximately 50% of our patients are male. About 30% of our liposuction patients are male.
What are the most commonly requested body areas for liposuction for men?
Abdomen, chest, love handles, and under the chin.
After liposuction for gynecomastia, how soon can I go back to work?
This of course depends on many things. In most cases, patients return to work within 1-3 days. If your work involves physical activity, it may be somewhat longer. However, in our practice even house painters and carpenters have usually been back at work within 2-3 days. This is not to say that you won't be sore if you are using your arms and chest muscles though.
After liposuction for gynecomastia, how soon can I go back to my workouts?
This varies quite a bit with the individual. It depends on what you are comfortable doing. You will find that doing some activities which do not involve impact or heavy pectoral muscle use can be done right away, but activities which do involve those you may want to put off for a while. Most patients probably prefer to avoid bench pressing for a couple of weeks or more, running can take a while longer to be comfortable.
After surgery, how often do I need to come back for follow-up visits?
I would like to see you at least a couple of times after your surgery. After your surgery, you will be able to contact me directly at any time if you have any questions or concerns. The first office visit is usually 6 weeks after the procedure, and then another several months after that. For patients who live in the Chicago area, a visit at 6 weeks, and 3, 6, and 12 months is usually recommended. You are welcome to come in as often as you wish. There is no charge for any follow-up visit.
How soon can I travel after having the procedure?
In most cases you can travel (including airplane flights) within 24-72 hours after your procedure. See also planning your liposuction.
How soon can I shower after the procedure?
You can take a shower within 24 hours, but you should not bathe in a tub for at least a week.
Are stitches used?
No. In my experience, the tiny incisions actually heal better without stitches.
Will general anesthesia or sedation be used?
No. We do not use general anesthesia or sedation. Our patients are very comfortable during the procedure using only local anesthetic.
