BEFORE & AFTER PHOTOS

DETAILS

Excessively large breasts can cause a range of physical and emotional problems, self-image issues and physical pain. Common effects of large breasts include:

Pain in the back, neck and shoulders
Increasingly poor posture
Soreness from bra straps digging into shoulders
Difficulty finding bras and clothing that fit
Rashes under the breasts
Inability to participate in many physical activities
Lack of confidence and self esteem

Breast reduction surgery, also called reduction mammoplasty, can help relieve these problems. Breast reduction surgery can be performed at any age, but most doctors recommend that is best to wait until the breasts are fully formed. Usually this is after the age of 20. There are times, however, when the surgery is performed on teenage girls, especially if the individual is feeling emotionally or psychologically stressed due to excessive breast size.

If you plan to have children and are looking forward to breastfeeding, you may want to put off the surgery until after you have your children. That’s because it may be difficult to breast feed after breast reduction surgery.

PROCEDURE

The pattern for breast reduction surgery is the same as a breast lift. In addition to the lift, excess breast tissue is removed. Liposuction may be performed with reduction to sculpt the surrounding areas for better contour.

RECOVERY

After your surgery, you will feel tired and will experience soreness and swelling. Your doctor will prescribe medication to help you feel more comfortable. You should plan on taking at least one week off while you recuperate. Physical activity should be kept to a minimum for a week or two, and heavy lifting or pushing should be avoided for three or four weeks. Your doctor may suggest wearing a special soft surgical bra or athletic bra for extra support. Your stitches will be removed in 2-3 weeks.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

The best candidates for breast reduction surgery are women whose breasts have fully developed and who are experiencing physical discomfort due to their breast size.

What are the benefits of breast reduction surgery?
Breast reduction surgery can remedy a number of problems associated with enlarged breasts, including : back and neck pain, shoulder strain, poor posture, skin irritation and infection, shortness of breath, difficulty participating in sports or other recreational activities, difficulty fitting clothes, social/sexual embarrassment.

What are the risks involved of breast reduction surgery?
As with all surgery, breast reduction surgery does come with some risks. Complications may include infection, blood clots, adverse reaction to anesthesia, nerve damage, loss of sensation, asymmetry, and scarring. In some cases, a woman may lose the ability to breast feed.

What does breast reduction surgery involve?
The techniques for breast reduction vary . However, the procedure is almost always performed under general anesthesia . Generally, the doctor will make an incision similar in shape to an anchor or inverted keyhole that encompasses the area from the top of the nipple to the crease of the breast. Then, the surgeon removes excess fat, skin, and tissue and repositions the remaining skin and areola. Breast reduction surgery usually takes one to three hours per breast .

What should I expect after breast reduction surgery?
After surgery, your breast area will be wrapped in gauze and an elastic bandage or surgical bra . You will have to continue wearing the bra/bandage even after the gauze has been removed, which usually happens several days after the breast reduction surgery. For several weeks to several months, you can expect to experience soreness and swelling while your breasts heal. Patients can usually resume work and other activities between one and six weeks after the surgery, depending on the individual.
