COSMETIC SURGERY PROCEDURES
BREAST AUGMENTATION
DETAILS
Many women who are dissatisfied with the size or shape of their breasts consider breast enlargement, which is also known as augmentation mammaplasty. Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure that helps enhance the size, volume, shape or symmetry of the breasts with the use of implants. These implants can be either filled with saline or silicone.
Breast augmentation can help enhance a woman's appearance and self-confidence. The best candidates are women who are looking for improvement, not perfection, and those who are physically healthy. Breast implantation is also used to reconstruct a breast after a mastectomy or injury. If you are considering breast augmentation, it's important to have realistic expectations and to talk to your surgeon about your concerns and overall expectations.
Reasons for Breast Augmentation
Although many women request breast implants to make the breasts large, there are other reasons as well. Some of the most common include:
| A loss of volume in the breasts, which results in sagging | |
| Small breasts | |
| Breasts do not fill out bras | |
| Breasts are not in proportion to the rest of the body | |
| One breast is larger than the other | |
| Weight gain, pregnancy or breastfeeding have changed the breasts | |
| The desire for more cleavage and a more attractive appearance |
In breast augmentation surgery, an incision is made, and the implant is positioned either beneath the chest wall muscle or directly behind breast tissue. The implants can be prefilled, or they can be filled during the surgery to achieve the volume desired.
There are a number of places where the incision can be made. Your surgeon will review these options with you, and make a recommendation based on your anatomy, the type of implant you will have inserted, and the results desired. The goal will be to minimize scarring, and keep the incision hidden. After the implants are in position, the incision is closed with sutures, and the chest may be wrapped with a bandage to provide support and aid healing. The surgery normally takes about two hours.
You will see the change in your breast size or shape immediately. But, you should expect some soreness and swelling. The swelling should decrease in 2-4 weeks. You incision lines will continue to flatten and fade over the period of about one year.
An important note about implants: Many women don't realize that breast implants do not last indefinitely. They may need to replaced. So, be sure to schedule an annual visit with your surgeon to for a checkup of your physical health, and to see if your implants need attention.
